Toyologist Review: Mr Potato Head Silly Suitcase

£12.99 from Toys R Us.

I don't know what sales of Mr. Potato Head were like in 1994, but in 1995 they must have rocketed. Yep, that was when Toy Story was released. Suddenly an old fashioned, dull toy was AWESOME. The brown lump of plastic suddenly had a personality and I have no doubt he was more popular now than at any point since he was introduced in 1952.

In 2005 Potato Head evolved with Darth Tater. Whoever thought up this up was a genius. We then had the Spud Trooper, R2-POTATOO, Optimash Prime, Spider-Spud - all of whom we bought, resulting in us now having hundreds of the things in our house. The last one we got was the Taters of the Lost Ark, as at this point I realised that a) they were taking up a lot of space, and b) thanks to the arrival of children in the house they were spending 99% of their time as naked potatoes.

The major problem with Mr. Potato Head - every single version - has been the lack of accessories. He's always come with very few, which meant that even though the whole idea behind him is to create a million different looks, this has always been difficult to do.

Well, with the Silly Suitcase this all changes.

There are 40 pieces included in the case, which results in loads of different ways to combine him. You can even make pretty convincing caricatures of real people. Like Granddad -

Yes, Granddad really does have muscles that big.

There were a few little problems when my two year old started playing with Mr Potato Head...

This is possibly not how Hasbro intended the pieces to be used.

I have a few niggles. First, the suitcase is possibly a little too small for all the pieces. The only way to get everything to fit is to pack the inside of Mr Potato Head first, then put him and all the other bits in the case. Second, the catch on the suitcase comes apart very easily. Great for small hands to open, not so great when you're carrying it and all the bits spill everywhere.

Third, you have to supply your own tortilla...

After getting the thumbs up from 4 and 2 year olds, we turned to Baby. What did she think of it?

Thank you, Baby!

You really can't go wrong with the Mr Potato Head suitcase - it'll entertain people from ages 0 to Granddad's age. I'd definitely recommend it over the standard Mr Potato Head - you get loads of extra bits for not that much more money.
